IL-6은 염증 및 B 세포 성숙에 관여하는 사이토카인을 암호화하는 유전자로, 자가면역 질환이나 감염 시 발열을 유도하는 내인성 발열 물질입니다. 이 유전자는 급성 및 만성 염증 부위에서 주로 발현되며, interleukin 6 receptor, alpha를 통해 염증성 전사 반응을 유도합니다.
IL-6의 기능은 당뇨병, 전신성 소아 류머티즘 관절염 등 다양한 염증 관련 질환과 연관되어 있으며, SARS-CoV-2 감염을 포함한 바이러스 감염 시 단백질 수치가 상승하는 것으로 보고되었습니다.
관련 질환으로는 Kaposi Sarcoma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Juvenile 등이 있습니다.
