Target Information
BID is a death agonist that heterodimerizes with either agonist BAX or antagonist BCL2. It belongs to the BCL-2 family of cell death regulators. BID mediates mitochondrial damage induced by caspase-8 (CASP8). CASP8 cleaves BID, and the COOH-terminal part translocates to mitochondria, triggering cytochrome c release. BID acts as a pro-apoptotic member of the BCL-2 family, usually existing in an inactive cytosolic form and becoming activated by caspase 8 upon TNF alpha or Fas ligand stimulation. The cleaved fragment (p15) translocates to mitochondria, initiating cytochrome c release and apoptosis. BID serves as a direct molecular link between caspase 8 activation and mitochondrial death machinery.
