Target Information
Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by significant biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. They range in molecular weight from approximately 40 kDa to 68 kDa and have isoelectric points between 4.9 and 7.8.
The various epithelia in the human body express cytokeratins that are characteristic of both the epithelium type and its degree of maturation or differentiation.
Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns are valuable in distinguishing different epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies are widely used in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry, as well as in cytopathology and flow cytometry assays.
