Target Information

AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal development.
In adults, AFP expression is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence can occur without pathology.
AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin; both genes are tandemly located on chromosome 4.
AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms, capable of binding copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin.
AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly.
Elevated serum AFP is observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), teratoblastoma, colorectal, pancreatic, and germ cell cancers.
