Target Information
Oncostatin M (OSM) is a growth and differentiation factor involved in neurogenesis, osteogenesis, and hematopoiesis. Produced by activated T cells, monocytes, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells, OSM can exert both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on cell proliferation. It promotes fibroblast, smooth muscle, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cell proliferation, but inhibits growth of certain normal and tumor cell lines. OSM also induces cytokine release (IL-6, GM-CSF, G-CSF) from endothelial cells and enhances LDL receptor expression in hepatoma cells. Structurally and functionally related to LIF, IL-6, and CNTF.
