Target Information

Tight junctions are one mode of cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial or endothelial sheets, forming continuous seals around cells to serve as a physical barrier preventing solute and water passage through the paracellular space. Claudin family proteins are integral membrane components of these junctions. Claudin 14 binds specifically to the WW domain of Yes-associated protein. Mutations in this gene can cause autosomal recessive nonsyndromic sensorineural deafness. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
