Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD71 antigen (transferrin receptor), a 95 kDa type II homodimeric transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on activated B and T lymphocytes, macrophages, and erythroid precursors. It is lost on resting blood leukocytes.
The antibody MEM-75 does not block binding of transferrin to the receptor.
Target Information
Cellular uptake of iron occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligand-occupied transferrin receptor into specialized endosomes. Endosomal acidification leads to iron release. The apotransferrin-receptor complex is recycled to the cell surface, returning to neutral pH and losing affinity for apotransferrin.
Transferrin receptor is essential for erythrocyte and nervous system development. Serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) is used to detect erythropoietin (EPO) misuse and diagnose anemias related to rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, irritable bowel syndrome, and HIV infection.
