Target Information
Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins and major noncollagenous components of basement membranes. They play key roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminins are composed of three non-identical chains (alpha, beta, and gamma), forming heterotrimeric structures (e.g., laminin 1 = α1β1γ1).
The Laminin gamma-2 chain is highly homologous to gamma-1 but lacks domain VI and has shorter domains V–III. It is expressed in epithelial tissues such as skin, lung, and kidney, forming part of Laminin 5 (kalinin), which anchors epithelial cells to basement membranes. Mutations in the gamma-2 gene are associated with junctional epidermolysis bullosa, a blistering skin disorder. Two transcript variants of gamma-2 exist due to alternative splicing, with differential expression in embryonic tissues.
