PGA5 (Pepsinogen 5, group I / Pepsinogen A)
Pepsinogens are inactive precursors of pepsin, a major acid protease in the stomach. Pepsin is a single polypeptide chain enzyme derived from pepsinogen by removal of a 41-amino-acid segment from the N-terminus. It is secreted by the gastric mucosa and requires hydrochloric acid for activation and maintenance of optimal acidity (pH 1–3). Pepsin cleaves peptide bonds involving aromatic amino acids, showing broad substrate specificity. PGA5 belongs to the pepsin family subfamily A1 and is the predominant endopeptidase in vertebrate gastric juice. It is inhibited by ovUS-1, a uterine serpin.
