PGA5 (Pepsinogen 5, group I / Pepsinogen A)
Pepsinogens are inactive precursors of pepsin, the major acid protease of the stomach. Pepsin arises from pepsinogen by removal of a 41-amino-acid segment from the N-terminus. It is synthesized in the stomach lining, and hydrochloric acid is required for activation and optimal pH (1–3). Pepsin cleaves peptide bonds involving aromatic amino acids, with broad specificity. PGA5 belongs to the A1 subfamily of the pepsin family and is the predominant endopeptidase in vertebrate gastric juice. PGA5 is inhibited by ovUS-1, a uterine serpin.
