Target Information
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the M28 peptidase family.
The protein acts as a glutamate carboxypeptidase on substrates including folate and N-acetyl-l-aspartyl-l-glutamate, and is expressed in prostate, central and peripheral nervous system, and kidney.
Mutations may impair folate absorption, leading to low blood folate and hyperhomocysteinemia.
In the brain, expression may relate to glutamate excitotoxicity, and in the prostate, it is upregulated in cancer cells, serving as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for prostate cancer.
This gene likely originated from a chromosomal duplication event; alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
