Target Information
TRPV1 (Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel Subfamily V Member 1) is a receptor for capsaicin, the main pungent ingredient in hot chili peppers, and elicits a sensation of burning pain by selectively activating sensory neurons.
It is a non-selective cation channel related to the TRP family (e.g., TRPC3, TRPC6), permeable to calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.
Structurally, TRPV1 contains six transmembrane domains, a P-loop membrane domain, and three ankyrin repeat domains.
It is activated by noxious heat and may function as a transducer of painful thermal stimuli.
Expression is mainly in sensory ganglia neurons.
Diseases associated with TRPV1 include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Bladder Disease.
