Target Information
CTDSP1 is a class 2C phosphatase with activity dependent on the conserved DxD motif. Expression of CTDSP1 inhibits activated transcription from several promoter-reporter gene constructs, while a mutant lacking phosphatase activity enhances transcription.
Neuronal gene transcription is repressed in nonneuronal cells by the REST/NRSF complex, which recruits SCPs to neuronal genes containing RE1 elements, leading to silencing. Phosphatase-inactive SCP forms interfere with REST/NRSF function and promote neuronal differentiation. SCP activity acts as an evolutionarily conserved transcriptional regulator that globally silences neuronal genes.
