Antibody detects endogenous levels of total CD28.

Target Information

CD28 antigen is a 44 kDa disulfide-linked homodimeric T cell-specific surface glycoprotein. It is a cell adhesion molecule of the immunoglobulin superfamily, constitutively expressed on most peripheral blood T lymphocytes. CD28 is the critical T cell costimulatory receptor that provides the second activation signal by binding CD80 and CD86 expressed by antigen-presenting cells.
In addition to its co-stimulation role, CD28 prevents T cells from entering an anergic or apoptotic state. In murine peripheral lymphoid organs and blood, all CD4+ and CD8+ T cells express CD28. In the thymus, expression is highest on immature CD3-, CD8+, and CD4+8+ cells, as well as CD4-8- cells expressing α/β and γ/δ TCR. Mature CD4+ and CD8+ α/β TCR+ thymocytes express CD28 at two- to fourfold lower levels.
Diseases associated with CD28 dysfunction include mycosis fungoides and Sezary’s Disease.
