Target Information
Cannabinoids exert their physiological effects through two G protein–coupled receptors, cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and CB2. Both receptors inhibit adenylyl cyclase and stimulate mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK).
CB1 receptors modulate ion channels via G-protein interactions, and psychoactive effects of cannabinoids are linked to inhibition of presynaptic N- and P/Q-type calcium channels.
CB2 is primarily associated with the immune system but may also be expressed in parts of the central nervous system, including the retina.
