Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family, playing an integral role in signal transduction and T-cell differentiation and activation. CD8 is predominantly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with T-cell receptor (TCR) for MHC-I molecules. CD8α is essential for MHC-I binding and is also found as homodimers on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes on antigen-presenting cells triggers Lck recruitment, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are crucial for pathogen and tumor clearance. Differentiation of naïve CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
