Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits serve as carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists only of A subunits identical to those in plasma. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium ions, factor XIII becomes factor XIIIa, a transglutaminase that stabilizes fibrin clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules and other proteins such as alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin. Factor XIII deficiency can lead to bleeding tendencies, poor wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
