Target Information

cAMP is a signaling molecule important for a variety of cellular functions. It activates the cAMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK), which transduces signals through phosphorylation of different target proteins. The inactive holoenzyme of AMPK is a tetramer composed of two regulatory and two catalytic subunits. cAMP causes dissociation of the holoenzyme into a dimer of regulatory subunits bound to four cAMP molecules and two free catalytic subunits. Humans have four regulatory and three catalytic subunits of AMPK. The protein encoded by this gene is one of the regulatory subunits, which can be phosphorylated by the activated catalytic subunit and may interact with A-kinase anchoring proteins to determine subcellular localization of AMPK.
