Beta Galactosidase는 glycosyl hydrolase 35 계열 단백질에 속하며, 여러 전사 변이체를 생성할 수 있습니다. 이 효소는 ganglioside 기질 및 기타 glycoconjugate로부터 말단 β-결합 galactose 잔기를 가수분해합니다.
이 유전자의 변이는 GM1-gangliosidosis 및 Morquio B syndrome과 관련이 있습니다.
