Target Information
Inhibins and activins regulate various biological functions including hypothalamic and pituitary hormone secretion, gonadal hormone secretion, germ cell development and maturation, erythroid differentiation, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, embryonic axial development, and bone growth, depending on their subunit composition.
Activins oppose the functions of inhibins. Inhibins are predominantly expressed in liver, uterus, and ovary tissue, and also in benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Inhibin A (α/βA dimer) and Inhibin B (α/βB dimer) inhibit follicle-stimulating hormone secretion. Inhibin βC forms a homodimer and is mainly expressed in adult liver and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
