Target Information
This gene encodes one of two high-affinity receptors for melatonin, the primary hormone secreted by the pineal gland. It is a G-protein coupled, 7-transmembrane receptor responsible for melatonin's effects on mammalian circadian rhythm and reproductive changes influenced by day length. The receptor is an integral membrane protein localized to two brain regions — the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (involved in circadian rhythm) and the hypophysial pars tuberalis (linked to reproductive effects).
