Target Information
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, especially in large axons. They consist of three polypeptide chains—NF-M, NF-H, and NF-L—that share structural similarity but differ in terminal sequences. NF-M tail-mediated interactions are essential for axonal size and cytoskeletal organization. NF-M phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation are reciprocally regulated, influencing filament formation and function. Antibodies against NF subunits serve as valuable neuronal markers due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
