Target Information

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease, affecting about 1% of people over 65 and 3% over 75. Mutations in the Park2 gene are a major cause of Parkinson’s disease. Park2 may play a role in the ubiquitin-mediated proteolytic pathway, and its mutations are associated with autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism. Panneuronal expression of Parkin substrate Pael-R causes age-dependent degeneration of dopaminergic neurons; coexpression of Parkin degrades Pael-R and suppresses its toxicity.
