Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by the ABCB7 gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. These proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
ABCB7 is part of the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance and antigen presentation. This gene encodes a half-transporter responsible for the transport of heme from mitochondria to the cytosol. It may also play a role in metal homeostasis, particularly with iron/sulfur cluster precursors. Mutations in ABCB7 have been associated with X-linked sideroblastic anemia with ataxia.
