Target Information

Cells respond to environmental stress by increasing expression of heat shock proteins. The small heat shock proteins (15–30 kDa) are diverse and found across species. Elevated expression of these proteins has been linked to neoplasia, including estrogen-induced proteins in breast cancer cells. Hsp27 shows rapid phosphorylation in response to mitogens and tumor promoters. Expression of a 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein correlates with steroid hormone receptor levels and is highly expressed in breast carcinoma. Studies also associate Hsp27 levels with endometrial adenocarcinomas. Regulation of Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock parallels ecdysteroid and heat shock activation in Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
