Target Information
TET1 is a dioxygenase that binds specifically to methylcytosine (5mC), a minor base in mammalian DNA essential for retrotransposon silencing and development. It catalyzes the conversion of 5mC to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (hmC), which may influence chromatin structure and act as an intermediate in cytosine demethylation. hmC is enriched in embryonic stem cells and brain tissue, particularly in Purkinje neurons, and may play roles in fetal development of the heart, lung, and brain.
