Target Information
The CYP2B6 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and is induced by phenobarbital. CYP2B6 metabolizes xenobiotics such as the anti-cancer drugs cyclophosphamide and ifosphamide. Transcript variants have been described, though it remains unclear whether they originate from CYP2B6 or the closely related pseudogene CYP2B7. Both are located within a cluster of cytochrome P450 genes (CYP2A, CYP2B, CYP2F subfamilies) on chromosome 19q.
