Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. It is primarily expressed in a subset of T-lymphocytes (T helper cells) and also found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Tissue-level expression includes thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and specific regions of the brain and gut. CD4 contributes to the early phase of T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck. It may also mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-related CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
