이 유전자는 Drosophila 및 여러 종에서 발견되는 VASA 단백질의 상동체를 암호화하며, 생식세포 계통에서 특이적으로 발현되어 생식세포 발달에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 여러 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
