Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor essential for early development of the nervous system. It is expressed in fetal brain and required for proper development and survival of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate expression of genes critical for neuronal circuit formation. High ASCL1 expression is observed in neuroendocrine tumors such as medullary thyroid cancer and small cell lung cancer, serving as a potential marker for neuroendocrine differentiation. The ASCL1 gene, located on human chromosome 12, includes a trinucleotide repeat region, making it a candidate locus for inherited diseases.
