Cellular Localization Cytoplasm; Golgi apparatus; Cytoplasmic vesicle; Cell projection (growth cone, axon, dendrite); Perinuclear region. Localized in soma and growth cones of differentiated neurites and in Golgi and vesicles of the early secretory compartment of epithelial cells. KIF5A/B/C-mediated transportation to axon tips is essential for its role in neuronal axon elongation.

Background

The protein encoded by this gene shares similarity with the Drosophila syd gene, required for the functional interaction of kinesin I with axonal cargo. Studies in mouse suggest that this protein interacts with and regulates the activity of multiple kinases in the JNK signaling pathway, functioning as a scaffold protein in neuronal cells. The C. elegans homolog regulates synaptic vesicle transport by integrating JNK signaling and kinesin-1 transport. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, though some full-length forms remain uncharacterized.
