Target Information

Translocation of nuclear-encoded preproteins into the mitochondrial matrix requires the coordinated action of the translocases Tom and Tim, which are located in the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes, respectively.
The Tom complex consists of multiple subunits, including import receptors (Tom70, Tom37, Tom22, and Tom20) and structural components (Tom40, Tom7, Tom6, and Tom5).
The Tim complex facilitates the import of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial preproteins and includes Tim17, Tim23, and Tim44 in equimolar ratios.
Tim17 exists as two isoforms, Tim17a and Tim17b, differing in their C-terminal sequences. These isoforms, along with Tim23, are ubiquitously expressed in fetal and adult tissues.
Tim17 and Tim23 form the structural elements of the inner membrane channel, while Tim44 recruits matrix-located Hsp70 to assist in protein translocation.
