Product Specific Information

The eBioGHI/61 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD163 (Haemoglobin Scavenger Receptor, M130), a macrophage scavenger receptor family member. CD163 is expressed by tissue macrophages and circulating monocytes and may also be expressed by hematopoietic progenitor cells. It functions as a high-affinity scavenger receptor for the hemoglobin–haptoglobin complex to clear hemoglobin from the blood.

Binding of this complex induces signaling that leads to IL-6 and IL-10 production. CD163 expression is upregulated by IL-6 and IL-10, while proinflammatory stimuli such as LPS or TNF-α cause shedding of a soluble CD163 form.

Target Information

CD163 (M130 antigen, Ber-Mac3, Ki-M8, SM4) is a 130 kDa membrane glycoprotein belonging to the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich superfamily. It acts as a receptor for the hemoglobin–haptoglobin complex, protecting tissues from oxidative damage and aiding in iron recycling. CD163 is expressed on human monocytes and macrophages, particularly in the late phase of inflammation.

Expression is upregulated by IL-10, IL-6, and dexamethasone, and shedding is induced by LPS and PMA. Binding occurs in a calcium- and pH-dependent manner, with higher affinity for multimeric haptoglobin complexes.
