Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is one of the highly conserved mini-chromosome maintenance proteins (MCM) essential for eukaryotic genome replication initiation. The hexameric MCM complex is a key component of the pre-replication complex (pre_RC), involved in replication fork formation and recruitment of other DNA replication-related proteins. The MCM complex (including MCM2, 6, and 7) possesses DNA helicase activity and may act as a DNA unwinding enzyme. Phosphorylation by CDC2 kinase reduces helicase activity and chromatin binding. This gene is mapped to chromosome 8 near PRKDC/DNA-PK, a kinase involved in DNA double-strand break repair. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
