The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodicity in protein abundance through the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases and exhibit distinct expression and degradation patterns, contributing to temporal coordination of mitotic events.
Cyclin H forms a complex with CDK7 kinase and ring finger protein MAT1, functioning as a CDK-activating kinase (CAK) capable of phosphorylating CDK2 and CDC2. This complex is part of TFIIH and RNA polymerase II assemblies, linking transcription control with cell cycle regulation.
