Target Information

3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD), also known as HSD3B1 or HSDB3, is a bifunctional enzyme essential in the synthesis of all classes of hormonal steroids. Two human 3β-HSD proteins, type I and type II, are expressed by different genes and function in distinct tissues.
Localized to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and expressed in skin and placenta, the type I enzyme catalyzes the oxidative conversion of Δ5-ene-3β-hydroxy steroids and various ketosteroids.
Defects in the 3β-HSD gene are associated with salt wasting, genital ambiguity, hypogonadism, insulin-resistant PCOS, and increased prostate cancer susceptibility. Congenital deficiency of 3β-HSD activity can result in severe depletion of steroid formation, which may be lethal in young children.
