Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays an essential role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) molecules.
It is also expressed on subsets of NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells.
Upon binding to MHC-I/peptide complexes, CD8 recruits lymphocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase (Lck), leading to cytokine production and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs).
Activated CTLs are critical for eliminating pathogens and tumor cells. Differentiation of naïve CD8⁺ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
