Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
The encoded cytoplasmic ribosomal protein is a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate of ribosomal protein kinases, with five C-terminal serine residues phosphorylated by various kinases.
Phosphorylation is induced by diverse stimuli such as growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. The protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation by selectively translating specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
