Target Information
ICAM-1 (CD54) is an 85–110 kDa single-chain type I integral membrane glycoprotein composed of:
- Extracellular domain with five immunoglobulin superfamily repeats
- Transmembrane region
- Cytoplasmic domain
ICAM-1 has seven potential N-linked glycosylation sites and shares sequence homology with ICAM-2 (CD102) and ICAM-3 (CD50).
It binds to integrins CD11a/CD18 (LFA-1) and CD11b/CD18 (Mac-1), and serves as a receptor for Rhinovirus.
ICAM-1 expression is found in activated endothelial cells, epithelial cells, fibroblasts, chondrocytes, B and T lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and neutrophils. Expression increases upon inflammation and is also detected in carcinoma and melanoma cells.
Soluble ICAM-1 is detectable in plasma and elevated in inflammatory conditions.
