Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in bone marrow and the immune system, arising from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP) that contains three additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins:
- Golli mRNAs: contain unique Golli-MBP exons spliced in-frame to MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
- MBP mRNAs: contain only MBP exons, encoding the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.
This conserved gene structure suggests that the MBP transcription unit is part of the Golli transcription unit, important for their functional and regulatory roles.
