This antibody reacts with soluble beta2-microglobulin. Beta2M is a 12 kDa Ig-like glycoprotein expressed on lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells. It is absent on erythrocytes.
Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms a subunit of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is expressed on many cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
It is found in free form in plasma and has a structure homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions. Beta-2-microglobulin is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and CD8+ T-cell signaling.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2 microglobulin levels are used as a marker for renal function and as a prognostic marker in HIV infection.
