Target Information
Oxygen radicals damage chromosomal DNA, leading to cell death and mutations. While much focus has been on the repair of 8-oxo-G lesions, many other oxidative DNA damages occur due to free-radical attack.
The human NTH1 repair protein is an enzyme that acts on various oxidatively damaged DNA sites.
A homologue of E. coli Endonuclease III, NTH is a DNA glycosylase with apurinic/apyrimidinic lyase activity and broad substrate specificity, including numerous pyrimidine ring saturation and fragmentation products.
Research indicates that NTH plays a crucial role in removing oxidative base lesions in mitochondrial DNA.
