Target Information

Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, predominantly in large axons. They consist of three polypeptide chains—NF-M, NF-H, and NF-L—that share structural similarity in a coiled-coil core domain but differ in terminal sequences. The C-terminal tails of NF-M and NF-H mediate filament interactions, influencing axonal size and cytoskeletal architecture. NF-M phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation regulate its function and translocation. Antibodies against neurofilament subunits serve as robust neuronal markers due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
