Target Information

The PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, including PRKCG (PKC gamma), is activated by intracellular signal transduction pathways. In humans, at least 12 different PKC isoforms have been identified, differing in structure, tissue distribution, localization, and substrate specificity.
PKC alpha, beta I, beta II, and gamma constitute the conventional PKC family, which are Ca²⁺- and phospholipid-dependent. PKC enzymes phosphorylate a wide range of protein targets and play key roles in cellular signaling. They also act as receptors for phorbol esters, known tumor promoters.

PKC gamma is specifically expressed in the brain and spinal cord, localized to neurons. It is involved in neuronal functions such as long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), and may play a role in neuropathic pain development. Mutations in PKC gamma are associated with the neurodegenerative disorder spinocerebellar ataxia-14 (SCA14).
