Target Information

SGMS2 is a bidirectional lipid cholinephosphotransferase that converts phosphatidylcholine (PC) and ceramide to sphingomyelin (SM) and diacylglycerol (DAG), and vice versa. The reaction direction depends on the relative concentrations of DAG and ceramide as phosphocholine acceptors. It specifically recognizes the choline head group on the substrate and requires two fatty chains on the choline-P donor molecule for efficient recognition. It may not function strictly as a sphingomyelin synthase and can be inhibited by bacterial PC-phospholipase C inhibitor D609. Localized to the Golgi apparatus and Golgi membrane as a multi-pass membrane protein. Expressed in brain, heart, kidney, liver, muscle, and stomach.
