Target Information
Gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (gamma-GCS) is the rate-limiting enzyme for glutathione (L-gamma-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine, GSH) synthesis. GSH serves as a vital intra- and extracellular antioxidant in mammalian cells. Gamma-GCS functions as a heterodimer composed of a heavy catalytic subunit and a light regulatory subunit, responsive to inflammation, phenolic antioxidants, heat shock, oxidants, and cytokines.
