Target Information
ABCA4 (ATP-Binding Cassette, Subfamily A, Member 4), also known as ABCR, is a protein encoded by the ABCA4 gene in humans. It belongs to the ATP-binding cassette transporter sub-family A (ABC1), found exclusively in multicellular eukaryotes. The gene is mapped to chromosome 1p21–p13 and is expressed exclusively in retinal photoreceptor cells, mediating transport of essential molecules across the photoreceptor cell membrane.
Immunofluorescence microscopy and Western blot analyses have shown ABCR expression in foveal and peripheral cones as well as rod photoreceptors. Loss of central vision in patients with Stargardt macular dystrophy is associated with ABCR-mediated foveal cone degeneration.
