Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) 또는 Human betaherpesvirus 5 (HHV-5)는 Orthoherpesviridae 계통에 속하며, betaherpesvirinae 아과에 포함됩니다.
다른 헤르페스바이러스(HSV 1, 2, varicella, Epstein-Barr virus 등)와 마찬가지로, HCMV는 숙주 내에서 장기간 잠복할 수 있는 특성을 가집니다.
CMV는 소변, 침, 모유, 혈액, 눈물, 정액, 질액 등 다양한 체액에서 발견되며, 선천성 HCMV 감염 선별에는 높은 viruria를 보이는 신생아의 소변 샘플이 주로 사용됩니다.
