Target Information
TRPM8 is a receptor-activated non-selective cation channel involved in detection of cool sensations, being activated by cold temperatures below 25 °C. It is also activated by compounds such as icilin, eucalyptol, and menthol, as well as by intracellular pH modulation.
TRPM8 is permeable to monovalent cations (Na⁺, K⁺, Cs⁺) and divalent calcium ions (Ca²⁺). Expression is mainly in prostate epithelial cells, with moderate levels in normal prostate tissue and elevated levels in prostate cancer. TRPM8 mRNA is also expressed in several non-prostatic tumors (breast, colon, lung, skin), but rarely in corresponding normal tissues.
