Target Information
VLR-1 is a calcium-permeable, non-selective cation channel with outward rectification, regulated in part by growth factors such as IGF1, PDGF, and morphogenetic neuropeptide/head activator.
VRL-1 does not respond to capsaicin, acid, or moderate heat, but is activated by high temperatures (threshold ≈ 52°C). Within sensory ganglia, VRL-1 is prominently expressed by a subset of medium- to large-diameter neurons, suggesting its role as a receptor for high-threshold heat responses.
VRL-1 transcripts are not restricted to the sensory nervous system, indicating potential activation by stimuli other than heat. It is one of six members of the vanilloid-like TRP-channel family, now known as the TRPV family.
